IRVINE, Calif. _ Matthew “Mal” Richardson, an attorney at Best Best & Krieger LLP who serves as assistant city attorney for Lake Forest, Azusa and Claremont, was appointed to the Housing, Community and Economic Development Committee of the League of California Cities.

The panel is one of eight policy committees run by the League. It reviews proposed legislation and other policy issues related to general plans and zoning, housing, building standards and other land use regulations that impact cities across the state. The committee then recommends whether the League should support or oppose a given issue.

Richardson has been with BB&K since 2008 and is based in the firm’s Irvine office, one of nine offices in California and Washington D.C. His practice focuses on municipal government, land use and environmental law. He is currently assisting his city clients in negotiating or implementing development agreements providing for the financing and construction of more than $200 million in public facilities.

Richardson’s one-year appointment was effective Jan. 1; he attended his first committee meeting on Thursday in Sacramento.

“We are thrilled to have one of our key municipal attorneys take part in one of the state’s most preeminent organizations dedicated to advocating the common interests of California’s cities,” said Jeff Ballinger, head of BB&K’s municipal law practice group.

Ballinger, who serves as city attorney to San Jacinto, was reappointed to the League’s Environmental Quality Committee as a representative from Riverside County.

Richardson received his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005; Ballinger received his law degree from the University of Southern California in 1999.
